Cataloguing in situ protection of genetic resources for major commercial forest trees in British Columbia

چکیده
Loss of genetic diversity can be due to a variety of causes and might take place unnoticed even in widespread and frequent species. In situ reserves can be a very efficient method of protecting genetic diversity in tree species if they are sufficiently large to sustain adequate populations and spatially well distributed to protect populations adapted to a range of environmental conditions. We use a geographical information system (GIS) based approach to assess the level of in situ protection based on forest inventory data. Recently revised maps of seed planning units used for management of genetic resources for 11 major commercial conifer species reflect geographic variation as observed in genetic tests. On this basis we investigate how well populations are represented in protected areas. Due to a systematic expansion of protected areas in the 1990s, it appears that conifer genetic resources are now well represented in protected areas. In this study we identify the remaining gaps for in situ protection and discuss implications for genetic resource management. Further, we evaluate protected areas for their importance with respect to gene conservation, and determine whether ground truthing is necessary to confirm that populations in protected areas are sufficiently large. # 2004 Elsevier B.V. Documentation of traditional knowledge about wild medicinal plants of moist temperate Himalayas in Pakistan
The moist temperate Himalayas, as one of the major ecological zone of Pakistan, deserve specific attention to the conservation of environment and the sustainable development of natural resources. During the last hundred years, the area has been subjected to major structural changes leading to a decrease of about fifty per cent of the potential forest area. The decrease in forest cover, combined...

Dead trees protection, has a key role in structural and biogeochemical processes in forest ecosystems. Some aspects of dead tree dynamics have been carefully studied, but the kind and decay degree of dead trees and forest soil properties have not received enough attention. The aim of this research was to study the effect of a kind and decay degree of dead trees on soil mineral properties in the...

متن کاملDifferences in Genetic Structure among Fagus orientalis Lipsky (Oriental Beech) Populations under Different Management Conditions: Implications for in situ Gene Conservation
Resource sustainability requires a thorough understanding of the influence of forest management programs on the conservation of genetic diversity in tree populations. To observe how differences in forest management affect the genetic structure of Fagus orientalis Lipsky (oriental beech), we evaluated thirteen beech sites across Hyrcanian forests, based on six microsatellite loci. Significant di...

Rotten and dead trees are the main component of forest ecosystems and play an important role in maintaining forest biodiversity. In this research frequency and characteristics of large diameter trees (normal, rotten, and dead trees) with diameter at breast height greater than 60 cm were studied in two compartments (selective logged and protected) in Asalem-Nav forest. Random systematic sampling...
